Sessions last about 50 minutes in duration and are scheduled weekly, bi-weekly or monthly depending on the needs of the client. Sessions may be individual, couple or family sessions, which is determined prior to the scheduled appointment. Often times I will suggest “homework assignments” but I promise these are very different from those you received in school. These are things for you to do and use outside of session to reach your goals. Why is “homework” important? We may meet for one hour of your busy week but the other hours are where the work is going to be done or practiced. This is where those tips, tools and techniques that you walk out of the office with are going to push you closer to achieving your goal.
Session Format:
Initial session- In the first session or initial session we will go over the initial paperwork, confidentiality and begin developing counseling goals. During this session it gives me a beginning idea of the things that are important to you and what you would like to get from our time together.
Second session- Continuing to identify and clarify goals of counseling and begin focusing on the story which brings you in to the office.
Subsequent sessions- These sessions are to begin working towards the goals outline in the previous sessions, check in on progress made and develop tools and skills to reach the destined goal. You may notice that your initial goals may change throughout counseling as you meet or identify new goals throughout your counseling process.
